English III
English III has been traditionally all about American Literature. With the Common Core, we have a little more leeway. I have concentrated on literature and non-fiction that deals with social justice, as well as social problems. In English III, we read The Adventures of Huck Finn, which brings up all the feelings about race, class, freedom, superstitions, religion, and various other topics. We also read other fiction, such as The Crucible, which deals with mass hysteria and how a society that has a theocracy can threaten the lives and freedom of its citizens.
I also like to do a Propaganda Unit with the book Unspun:finding facts in a world of disinformation. When we do this unit, students are put in groups and asked to teach one chapter from the unit. I do this after I teach a couple of the units, so that they will know how to do this.
The research paper is a part of the curriculum for English III at South Stokes HS. The research paper is taught and done almost exclusively with computers and think pads, so we use technology most of the time. I even teach how to format a research paper using you tube clips.
